The Victorians kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love. In much the same way, I secure my memories through photographic images rendered in lines of my own hair, the physical remnants. I do not reproduce events, but quiet minutes, the mundane, the domestic, the ordinary moments.
Say you have a crush on someone. Or maybe you're already a couple. Instead of sending her an email or calling him up, has it ever occurred to you to secretly fill her mailbox with tangerines or to dangle crayons from the tree outside his window? This project explores mediums of romantic conversation and connection. How might paying special attention to objects enrich the process of dating and getting to know someone? Or how might it make a long-going relationship more meaningful? I am gathering together a collection (see below) of creative approaches to courtship – to inspire us all to think outside of the "inbox" and remember that we live in a vivid world of color and texture.
Ways to participate:
• Create and share an idea for a creative courting activity that involves objects. Keep in mind that your creative activity will likely be much more meaningful if it is customized especially for the particular person who will be receiving it. See the guide for tips and prompts that can help you develope your idea. Or for more personal assistance, purchase a creative courtship consulting session in the shop. When you are ready to share your idea with this project, you can either send me something in the mail that embodies the idea and explains how it works, or email me a photo and description of the idea. If there is background information or context that makes your story more interesting, please include that as well. And if you have actually put the idea to use, I'd love to hear how it went. I will be adding some of your ideas to the collection.
• Try an idea from the collection – perhaps tweak it to make it your own. Consider starting a back-and-forth conversation and end your creative courting activity with an invitation for the other person to respond with one of her own. Good luck! And I'd love to know how it goes over.

Remember the book "Harold and the Purple Crayon"? Well, a romantic interest once told me that he was Harold for Halloween when he was in kindergarten, carrying around a giant cardboard purple crayon. (And this happens to be my favorite book from childhood.) So this one's for him. The idea is to fill a tree outside his window with dangling crayons. Who knows: the crayons might start coloring all those white blossoms in the night!

Etsy :: MiniatureRhino :: message in a bottle letter service.
I love receiving and sending letters and mail, which is one of my favorite parts of etsy- waiting for and receiving the package! I’m all about facilitating unique mail experiences, so I’m offering a little letter service, via a message in a bottle. Imagine receiving this miniature letter contained in a corked glass vial. This one shown is the first one and made for my boy. I will type out your provided text on vintage book paper using a vintage typewriter. The little letter will be sealed with a very small bit of red wax and sealed with any letter you’d like. The final touch is a copper key hand stamped with a custom monogram. You can also customize the type of ribbon you’d like the key tied with. Choose from rope, black and red satin ribbons shown in the last image. While its too late for Valentine’s Day how about sending another romantic note, or a sweet birthday message, an invite, an alternative to a card, a thank you note, or a letter just because. The vial is wrapped like gift in a tiny box for a truly special mail experience.
Sabrina Ward Harrison - 100 Bits of the World - True Living Project.
Title Quote: Helene Cixous
"Two years ago I ended up in a field of grass hip high. This is where I began to make the body work that has come to be called The True Living Project. E.E. Cummings said a poet a “someone who is abnormally fond of that precision which creates movement”. Which is to say the highest form of concentration possible: fascination; to report on the electrifying experience of being. On a daily basis we teeter on the edge of humanity losing history through the fading cultural landscape of our country and our interconnectedness as human beings. Though unconscious development and historical neglect. As we have barreled deeper and deeper into a technological / result driven 21st century, now more than ever I do believe we need to be brought home to the presence of our living. To allow the restful validation of your own tender true humanity, may this work be a living ode to our living. I am striving to create both a visual and emotional unfolding through the textural interchange of photography, sound, collage, film and found objects. As you observe, as you listen, may you rest into that place where this moment, and your memory, exist." -Sabrina Ward Harrison
Marian Bantjes: Valentines 2009.
My 2009 valentines were a bit of a departure in a number of ways. They were more “conceptual” than previous years. Where previously I sent a nice or pretty something that was either straight forward or easy enough to figure out, this one is a bit more mysterious. This year I wrote 4 fragments of letters; each has no beginning and no end; and each is carefully crafted to hopefully have some resonance with most people. Each recipient got one fragment. - Marian Bantjes
