“This is tragic. I don’t want to shred the past!”
exclaimed Chochinov when he saw Susanna Hertrich’s design. Part
calendar, part clock, part paper shredder, the device— which takes 24
hours to turn each day into hamster bedding—yields a poetic yet
tangible reminder of the passage of time. While researching hibernation
as a possible cancer cure, Hertrich wondered if long naps might be
looked to as the next fountain of youth (the metabolism slows to such
an extent that the aging process is delayed). If so, she asked, “Would
there be a need to remind people to actually live their lives? Would
people start to count awake seconds in the future, just like people
today obsessively count calories?” A microchip allows Chrono_Shredder
to work at a constant rate; like time, it can’t be paused. “Cinematic
and very poignant,” Zurkow said.
