darkness & light

The real and the dream became one, or rather reality was one of the dream's configurations.

We are all prompted by the same motives, all deceived by the same fallacies, all animated by hope, obstructed by danger, entangled by desire, and seduced by pleasure.

"Chiharu’s works convey a very personal, profound meaning; they are a physical creation of a shrouded memory literally exploding from the artist.  Because of this we feel a deep connection with her and are at the very least sympathetic if not at all empathetic." from site

Title Quote: Samuel Johnson

I would hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo, and if an echo sounded, no matter how faintly, I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of hunger for life that gnaws in us all.

To confront a person with his own shadow is to show him his own light. - carl jung

Another world is not only possible, She is on her way. And on a quiet day, if you really listen, you can hear her breathing.

Title Quote: Arundhati Roy

Much like a subtle spider, which doth sit / In the middle of her web, which spreadeth wide: / If aught do touch the utmost thread of it, / She feels it instantly on every side.

"Karen was interested in using some of the more stylized plant forms that Carl had developed for his Louis Dore cast bronze tables. Carl welded three bronze branches together in a radial form, then patinated them to bring them back to the feeling of old weathered branches. Karen wove semi-precious stones to create the look found in the dark rooms of an old manor once forgotten, and now rediscovered.

Cast bronze branches tied with metal rope, draped with webs of serpentine, rock crystal, peridot, citrine, carnelian, calcite, and jasper." -Carl Dern Studio

Title Quote: Sir John Davies

The poem is a little myth of man's capacity of making life meaningful. And in the end, the poem is not a thing we see-it is, rather, a light by which we may see-and what we see is life.

"The results of an extensive exploration with shadows, the One Day Poem Pavilion demonstrates the poetic, transitory, site-sensitive and time-based nature of light and shadow. Using a complex array of perforations, the pavilion’s surface allows light to pass through creating shifting patterns, which–during specific times of the year–transform into the legible text of a poem. The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different shadow-poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice, a reflection on the passing of time at the period of the winter solstice. The time-based nature of the poem–and the visitor’s time-based encounters with it–allow viewers to have different experiences either seeing a stanza of the poem or getting the whole poem. All of these possible experiences are equally valuable and have meanings unique to the individual. This technique has the potential for producing particular effects and meanings within an architectural environment. Without the use of a source of power other than the sun, this project uses light and shadow to push the boundaries of communication and experiential delight." -One Day Poem Pavilion by Jiyeon Song

Even a thought, even a possibility, can shatter us and transform us.

"Less Light" is a sealed lamp shade that needs to be broken in order to release the light trapped within. The shell is cracked using a specially designed hammer. The user decides the appearance and position of the hole depending on how much light is required and where it is to be directed." Jordi Canudas

Title Quote: Nietzsche

Where'er I roam, whatever reallms to see, My heart untravell'd fondly turns to thee; Still...turns, with ceaseless pain, and drags at each remove a lengthening chain.

"Throughout the ages, in the West, as well as in various other cultures around the world, women have always been encouraged to achieve an unrealistic state of 'ideal' beauty even in cases where it has been detrimental to their health. This is apparent in more extreme examples like the Victorian corset and Chinese foot binding. Women, it seems, are willing to suffer for the sake of beauty. Ninette is interested in conveying this relationship through textiles, looking at seams and mark makings on the body in particular."

"With an enviable dexterity, Luminary Warren Muller creates fantastic lighting sculptures from found, recycled, and salvaged objects. His novel approach to these cast-aside items results in work at home in environments both modern and traditional. Recent pieces are mostly by commission and often incorporates existing chandeliers and/or the collective tchochtkes of his clients."
