This, therefore, is a faded dream of the time when I went down into the dust and noise of the Eastern market-place, and with my brain and muscles, with sweat and constant thinking, made others see my visions coming true. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible.  -TE Lawrence

"MICHAEL RUH It is my particular interest in glassmaking to address the inside of the Vessels I make. Sometimes purely in visual terms, or sometimes in Physical terms. In some vessels the inside of the vessel is marred, Incised and manipulated during the making process. It is my goal to Add visual and aesthetic interest to my work not by using garish colours or added glass embellishments, rather by recording my interaction with each individual piece. In some pieces I do this by means of incising and manipulating the inner surface of the vessel while I am making it. This process leaves not only visual traces but a physical relief within the piece too. In others, such as the graal pieces, the outermost coloured layer of glass has been removed during a cutting process to reveal the underlying clear glass which visually penetrates through to the vessel's interior. I wish to leave the traces of my intent within the glass and create a visible yet transient structure of movement and light"

Clarity of mind means clarity of passion, too; this is why a great and clear mind loves ardently and sees distinctly what he loves. -Blaise Pascal

The Tulipani vase is the latest in a series of striking contemporary designs created by Michael Ruh. A number of open-ended tubes are held within a simple container to highlight the form of the tulip – a favorite flower of the artist. Available in clear or colored glass, Tulipani combines functionality with the aesthetics of a confident and accomplished piece of art that may be enjoyed either with flowers or as a standalone piece.

The honey of heaven may or may not come, But that of earth both comes and goes at once. -Wallace Stevens

While traveling in 1999, Anne Becker, the company's founder, began collecting honeys from places around the world. Initially drawn to the wide range of color and how honey captures light, Anne started putting the most beautiful honeys in laboratory vials to see the honey outside of its usual "honey bear" packaging. Anne began giving the honey vials to friends as gifts. Her friends in turn wanted to know where they could buy them to give as gifts to other friends. Before long, she was filling test tubes and labeling corks by hand in her home kitchen.Honeyvialslarge_1

As orders started increasing in numbers, she moved the honey into its own space in Dumbo, Brooklyn & Beehive Beeproducts was born in December of 1999.

Wanting to give customers an opportunity to enjoy more than just a single test tube of beehive honey, Anne designed the 8 ounce jar, inspired by 1970's generic food packaging.

Today, rawbee [beehive beeproducts] is still a small, local New York business. We are committed to supporting the work of small scale beekeepers in the United States & are passionate about the quality of our artisanal beekeepers honey.

There is a plethora of amazing varietal honeys to be found in this country and it is our goal to make those honeys available to consumers everywhere.

Sweet fire the sire of muse, my soul needs this; I want the one rapture of an inspiration. -Gerard Hopkins

Brick Oven Plans | Build an Italian Brick Oven.Pompeii2

he Pompeii Oven is a set of free plans that describe how to build a traditional round Italian brick oven. The oven is built using firebricks and materials easily found at Home Depot and other building supplies stores. It's a great oven, and a great project.

Much like Open Source Software, the plans are freely accessible for your use. They are also copyrighted, so please ask Forno Bravo for permission to to re-publish any of the material, and make sure to give Forno Bravo appropriate attribution. If you are curious why the plans are free (really), read our Why Free page. Otherwise, join our User Group and have fun!

Wood-fired brick ovens and pizza have been with us since the dawn of civilization. Both have been discovered in the excavations of virtually every ancient civilization, with the brick oven reaching its modern form in ancient Rome. The brick ovens uncovered in ancient Pompeii and Naples are in wonderful shape, and could start baking today with only minor renovations -- the Pompeii Oven is named in their honor. When you have a minute, take a look at our ancient Pompeii Oven Photographs...
