"Imagine yourself in a family house on a still summers day, quiet except for the chiming of a familiar domestic music. Seized by a sense of deja vu, you do not want to sleep, and while everyone else is dozing, you persue your intrigue through the hallways of the old place. Suddenly, a childhood nostalgia perfumes the air and you are summoned to the attic, a place of memories. A sanctuary of your grandfather, it is sombre and crowded with neglected and forgotten objects. It is difficult to pass; you negotiate past a byclicle, an old hover and various brica brac, a jungle of souvenirs and finally you find it, a treasure trove of memories: photographs, letters, drawings, a marriage certificate-proof of the trials, misdeeds, joys and rapture of the life of those sleeping peacefully below. Their choices, their doubts their rituals, their pain their happiness their history. Opening the box inspires a jack-in-the-box emotional response. In this box one life is not concentrated inside, but many, a collective adventure of those composing the disparate Favela Chic family. It is an eclectic family that has grown organically throughout time, spreading its wings with one intention: to fly."

The contribution of the illustrious design labels Boffi, Bisazza and Moooi was essential in realising this ambitious concept.

A row of exquisitely beautiful, 18th century cottages, all commanding views of the Amstel River and the spectacular Dutch skies, have been converted into 7 suites.

The appeal of the Lute Suites is that the guests enjoy complete freedom of movement combined with truly homely surroundings, which make them ideal for a longer stay. The modern and simultaneously classical decor imbues the suites with a delightful ambience, combining warmth with a global style; an ideal environment for expats. The comfort and the service included offer these international travellers a very comfortable home base. And this is just the effect Lute and Wanders wished to achieve with their concept.

All the Suites have their own front door and comprise a living room, a separate bathroom and a separate bedroom. In the living room, a kitchenette and a wine rack provide the necessary home comforts, while the flat screen lcd-screen and DVD-players invite you to kick off your shoes and wind down at the end of the day. The bedroom, with a double bed, is usually on the second floor or in the loft and in two suites there is a so-called ‘sleeping nook’. All the bathrooms have a separate toilet, a bath and a separate shower.All the suites command unsurpassed bucolic views of the Amstel River."

Ravioli - 12 x 12 packets filled with assorted items then distributed in pub lic places

Temporary Services made large, twelve-inch ravioli. The ravioli and most of the filling are not edible, but it should still be a delight to cut them open and find out what is inside. Our ravioli have see-through plastic shells that have been heat-sealed on all four sides to keep the stuffing in and the rain-water out. The shells contain a variety of ingredients contributed by the three Temporary Services members and invited guests. Some of the items are practical. Other items encourage different types of play. Some ingredients are simply intended to amuse.

The ravioli were distributed in public places. They were attached to walls with staples and double-sided tape. They were left in front of doorways and strung up on clothes lines in town squares. The ravioli are gifts to unsuspecting passersby that encounter them. The project is intended to engage a wide range of people. Anyone that sees or takes a ravio li becomes the audience for this gesture.

Big Boy on the Block

Although the liberal and artsy leanings of the space don't suggest competitive conflict, Busboys and Poets seems like it's trying to knock Tryst and Kramerbooks out the box. Tom Sietsema recently weighed in on the food but really, it's not about the food. Well, it's kinda about the food because it's cheap and good, and that counts for a lot with singles stretching their date budgets. More on that shortly.

Owner Andy Shallal is positioning his new venture as a depot for intellectuals and activists to work, share and socialize. Hefty luminaries like Harry Belafonte and Amiri Baraka have already appeared on the packed schedule of events. But this blog isn't about that stuff either, as welcome as it is.

I'm just here to predict that Busboys and Poets is about to be a serious social scene. The location is great, the look is appealing, the prices are right and the vibe is gelling nicely.

This past Saturday I made my maiden voyage and was pleasantly surprised to find a mixed crowd varying widely across age, race and social spectra. Some were on dates, others were on group outings or just browsing and chatting in the bookstore and a few were just trying to get some new numbers in their cell phones. People-watching opportunities abounded. A pair of DJs dropped dub, Afro and Brazilian plates;being a DJ and live-music junkie myself, I immediately took note of the array of high-end powered speakers optimally installed throughout the sizable room. This is one of the few establishments where the sound system is set up to strike the prime balance between allowing conversation and creating a mood.

A second visit on a weeknight presented a different side, with some folks nestled up with their laptops, a few large groups of friends having dinner and an after work crowd just wrapping up for the evening.

The decor takes the best elements of chic lounge and coffeehouse and marries them nicely. It's comfortable but sleek, a combination not easily achieved. It's also a non-smoking establishment. Forgive me if I sound partisan in light of the local smoking wars, but the absence of an acrid haze just makes everything sexier. Busboys and Poets is the new crucial date spot, especially when you can get a decent-sized personal pizza and a Delirium on tap and still kick in for dessert with little more than a twenty. And you can do that before or after you take in some poetry, an indie film screening or an emerging theater piece. The way they're making good on tons of potential is exciting and leads one to think, "If only they had a dancefloor." That might be too much to ask based on hawkish ABC and ANC policy. But in the meantime, Busboys and Poets is making its presence known in a big way.
